Basha and Mapasha
Basha is an eight-year-old with sparkling eyes and standing tall beside him is his younger, five-year-old younger brother, Mapasha who is all smiles. These ‘two young geniuses’ as their teacher proudly calls them are fluent in three languages Hindi, Kannada and Telugu. They are now even capable of conversing in English. These two kids have no prior experience of formal schooling before they joined Vathsalya, hence when these two do their math calculations with such high speed and accuracy, it leaves everyone spellbound. Their parents are migrant construction workers from Andhra Pradesh. Basha and Mapasha would accompany their parents regularly to the construction sites before Vathsalya found them.
‘These boys have learnt a tremendous amount of things in the short span of time that they have been here for. The pace at which they are making progress is a magic by itself’, says their first and only teacher. She adds that their parents have gotten another contract and they may be moving to a different locality soon due to which, the children’s learning may be discontinued. ‘I’m afraid that these children might return to construction sites with their parents and not get a chance to be educated again. I am confident that if the Basha is coached for two more years, although he’ll be only 12 years, he can write the 10th standard board exams and he will pass with flying colours.
